Prepositions with the Genitive

In German, prepositions determine the case of nouns and pronouns they occur with. Most prepositions are always used with the same case (accusative, dative or genitive), but there is a group of common prepositions that are sometimes used with the accusative and sometimes with the dative. 

These Genitive prepositions are the most frequent: 

(they are sometimes used with the dative, especially in colloquial language)

(an)statt Anstatt seines Autos hat er heute den Bus genommen.
trotz Trotz des schlechten Wetters hatten wir einen schönen Urlaub.
während Während unseres Urlaubs haben wir viele neue Leute kennengelernt.
wegen Wegen des starken Regens konnten wir nicht spazierengehen.
außerhalb Sie wohnen außerhalb der Stadt.
innerhalb Das Projekt muss innerhalb einer Woche beendet werden.
