Basic Adjectives

Adjectives are used to describe objects, people or actions. Here are some basic German adjectives and their opposites. Try and learn them in pairs.

klein – groß     (small – big)

gut – schlecht     (good – bad)

richtig – falsch     (right – wrong)

alt – neu     (old – new)

alt – jung     (old – young)

kalt – warm, heiß     (cold – warm, hot)

laut – leise     (loud – quiet)

schön – häßlich     (beautiful – ugly)

leicht – schwer    (light – heavy)

leicht, einfach – schwierig     (easy – difficult)

schwach – stark     (weak – strong)

teuer – billig     (expensive – cheap)

lang – kurz     (long – short)

dick – dünn     (thick – thin)

weich – hart     (soft – hard)

schnell – langsam     (fast – slow)

weit – nah     (far – near)

dunkel – hell     (dark – bright, light)

gesund – krank     (healthy – ill, sick)

fleißig – faul     (hard-working – lazy)

voll – leer     (full – empty)

süß – sauer     (sweet – sour)

trocken – nass     (dry – wet)

lustig – traurig     (funny – sad)

eckig – rund     (angular – round)

munter – müde     (awake – tired)

offen – geschlossen     (open – closed)
